Miles in the Forrest
Off to East St. Louis, which is in Illinois not Missouri, and where Miles Davis grew up and started earning his props playing with local guys like Jimmy Forrest, whose CD "Forrest Fire," OJC, is one blues drenched, soulful romp.
I spent about 7 years of my life in Southern Illinois -- Salem -- and before the interstate was finished (this was back in the 60's), we had to drive through East St Louis to get to St Louis itself. That was when it was a volatile place, racially.
Enjoy your time there, following the Davis trail! And please tell that part of the world "hello" from a former resident!
Hello Janet. I was actually in East St. Louis working on a story about about computer stuff, although I want to go see the Davis house there sometime, which people tell me is still standing. The community has quite a history musically, including Ike and Tina Turner besides Miles.
