Weaned on AP Style, I follow its wise guidance. Update received today: Whenever "alt-right" is used in a story, include a definition: an offshoot of conservatism mixing racism, white nationalism, anti-Semitism and populism, or, more simply, a white nationalist movement. You can toss a neo-nazi in there if you like, too, AP says. I like to add ignorant shitheels as well, but that isn't strictly AP Style.
